Second Fatality Incident Involving Sanitation Workers Occurs in N.J.

Julio DelaRosa, a Union City, N.J., resident and employee of Allegro Sanitation, died last week at the company’s headquarters after being backed over by a garbage truck, which was driven by another Allegro employee. According to authorities, no charges or summonses were issued and neither the speed of the vehicle nor carelessness were factors in the incident.

“This was one of two fatal accidents, within 6 miles of one another, on consecutive days in northern New Jersey," comments Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) CEO and Executive Director David Biderman. "These tragic incidents were part of an extraordinary week in which seven people, including three employees, were killed in six separate incidents involving waste collection vehicles in the United States. SWANA will continue to work with its members, industry partners and others to reduce the frequency of these tragic incidents.”

A 56-year-old man was killed last week when he was struck by a garbage truck at a Secaucus sanitation company, police said.

Julio DelaRosa, a Union City resident and employee of Allegro Sanitation, was killed Thursday at the company's headquarters on Secaucus Road, Secaucus police Capt. Dennis Miller said.

DelaRosa had his back to the Mack Truck when it backed into him and ran him over in the sanitation yard on company property around 1:20 p.m., Secaucus police Lt. Martin Moreda said.
